But there are still plenty of things you’ll benefit from doing in the run-up to moving day, to make sure everything goes smoothly – and to be sure you get your money’s worth.
1. Declutter your home
When you have professional packers, it can be tempting to just leave them to it. But decluttering means you’ll thank yourself once you get to the other side. After all, you’re the one who will have to unpack the boxes in your new home.
So, make the time for a clear-out ahead of the move. Take unwanted items to charity shops, list them online or dispose of them. That way not only will the packing process be faster, but unpacking will be easier too.
2. Confirm dates and times
Check in with your removals team ahead of moving day to make sure that you’re all on the same page regarding days and times. Agree a schedule, and clearly communicate any timings that must be adhered to, such as a time by which you must return keys, or restrictions on parking.
Make it your responsibility to keep on top of the timings. A professional removals company will do their best to stick to the schedule, but it’s important for you to keep track of time too.
3. Check parking options and access restrictions
Consider the space available for parking at both locations. Your furniture removers will need to get their vehicle as close to both properties as possible, for efficiency and safety, so work out where they can park in advance, and let them know.
Check whether there are any access restrictions in place at either location and communicate this to your removals team. You may need a special permit, so decide who will arrange this if required.
4. Think about the logistics
Think carefully about any challenges that could arise, whether it’s a sofa that won’t fit through the doorway, or roadworks en route to the new property. Let your furniture removers know of any potential issues, so they can work with you to find the best solution.
And don’t forget to consider any logistical challenges that could be thrown up by your new home’s space or layout. If you’re worried about fitting everything inside – even after decluttering – why not consider putting some items into storage?
5. Pack a moving day box
Pack yourself a box of essentials for the first night in your new home. The last thing you will want to do when you arrive is rummage through endless boxes just to make a cup of tea, replace a lightbulb or go to bed. Pack a box with overnight things, simple crockery, a kettle, bedding and chargers.
Do this before the packers arrive and set this box aside – or put it in your own car – so it doesn’t get mixed up with the rest of your belongings.
6. Label boxes clearly
Make sure every box is labelled, not only with its contents, but with the room or area of the new property it should go into.
Don’t forget that your removals team doesn’t know the layout of the new house, nor what each room will be used for. So use terms that will make sense to them.
